Max, awoke to the sound of her alarm.. Like almost everyday it felt as though her eyes had just closed. She took a deep breath and turned her alarm off. She wouldn’t say she was a morning person, she was just put together. Max from the time she was little always had things her way, or made sure that things were done exactly. It had served her well in school and in the business world, she currently had a really good job that she had almost automated to where it could run without her. She loved being looked at for work of how reliable she was at things.

Max went through her morning routine which included getting herself ready and presentable for work as well as getting the kids ready for school and out the door. She was usually exhausted by the time it was over and ready to go back to bed, but today she had a little extra motivation to be at work. She had finally gotten the okay to try to see if Ryan would be up for taking their friendship to something more. She had already crossed a line with kissing him, but now to know that Mark was okay with that and a whole lot more made her body buzz throughout, more then any coffee could get her blood going in the morning. It had her going this morning, just the thought of what the day could entail.
One advantage of this getting her blood and body going, was she was way more cheerful then normal, the arguments with the kids and the stress of getting them ready just went off her back like she had always hoped that it would. Knowing that something new was waiting for her at work was all she needed.
As the final car drop off was being done, Max turned her attention to the drive to work and how she was going to handle it. Her and Ryan’s relationship was a great friendship and it had been more in the car that day where she wanted to test what it was like to kiss another guy. But since that day it had went back to the relationship but there was still a tinge of sexual frustration in the relationship. It made the workday fun… Max couldn’t imagine what the relationship would be like after that.
Her mind thought of what that could mean, would it make a crazier relationship or would it be the end of it? The sexual tension building daily and then having the natural release or all the good about their relationship could be over. That last thought made Max scared for the first time in the longest time she can remember. It’s not that she was in love with Ryan but it was more he made work tolerable and she was crossing a line she had told herself she would never cross with him or cross with someone at work.
With all of this going on in her mind, it took her about two miles past work for her to realize not only had she made it to work, but blasted right past it. She got turned around and focused on driving back to work, to say she was flustered was beyond. Max was ready for this. She finally found her spot and parked the car.. She took a deep breath as she got ready to open her car door, and before it could get all to her lungs, she lost her breath again seeing Ryan gliding through the parking lot.
Ryan, as any single 24 year old guy, was fashionable, not like most dad’s that Max saw most days and especially not like Mark. Ryan’s clothes always fit just right and were always suited for his body. Max really enjoyed the looks that she got to steal during the day. Max picked up her pace slightly, she wanted to catch Ryan in the elevator heading up to their floor. She had a plan on how this day would go, and this was a perfect way to get the ball rolling and starting her plan way earlier then she thought she could.
Ryan walked in to the elevator and turned to hit the button to his floor, it was Monday and repalys of the weekend were going in his head. He loved his job here, well as much as any 24 year old could love his job. It was a great role and it paid him really well, especially for his age, but like any young professional just out of college Ryan wanted more. But the role did have one thing that no other role had, and that was Max. Max was the one thing that brought him out of his thoughts about the weekend and the thought always went back to that afternoon in the car when Max kissed him. They had talked since and both agreed it was a one time thing but Ryan wished it was more… wished it was way more.
His mind was slowly thinking about what that would look like as the doors started to close on the elevator and then he saw a tanned white hand stop them from closing. His heart skipped a beat, because he knew what hand that was and he almost felt like a kid who’s mom had just walked in on him in the bedroom.
“Oh, hey Ryan!” Maxine cheerfully greeted him. She had her hands full with a bag and her signature Starbucks drink. You could always tell what kind of morning it was for Max, because she had three type of drinks. Home coffee mug meant that her and Mark had been talking about finances. Dunkin meant that she was running late and stopped at the Dunkin that had just opened right outside their neighborhood. Starbucks meant it had been a great morning and she had gotten up, the kids ready, and everyone where they needed to be with time to spare so it was her treat. She was always cheerful on these days.
“Hey Max! I didn’t see you or I would have walked in with you” Ryan responded, wanting to say the quiet part of, or taken you back to your car for a minute. But he was professional, and no one wanted to be the guy who couldn’t keep it in his pants at work.
“Oh, you were way past me. You must have had a good morning to get here this early.” Max flirted with him a bit, or at least Ryan hoped it was flirting.
“Yeah, had a good weekend and then got to bed really early last night. So feeling good for this week.”
“Well that is always good, busy week for you?” Max asked.
“Ehh not to bad, hopefully some meetings that will turn into something but nothing that’s imminent.” Ryan tried to ask her the same but the doors opened to their floor and they went separate ways to their desk. He did get out a have a good day to her.
Max was at her computer and unpacking her bag and everything, trying to scheme up her next play as well as trying to figure out what work would look like this week for her too. Knowing that Ryan was free most week, or at least sounded like things that he could move around helped. Max had asked Mark before she left about the weekend, and there was a game that Saturday at 12pm. It was a big game, it would determine if their school made the playoffs and was against the in state team. Max thought it would be a great way to get Ryan over.
Now she just had to come up with how she brought it up to Ryan and didn't seem out of place. Max finally got her workspace looking like she wanted with her laptop and everything plugged in and started answering emails that had came through the weekend and this morning.
Max noticed a blinking notification at the bottom of her screen, realized it was a zoom notification so she decided to look quick just in case it was her boss. She quickly saw it was Ryan and a slight smile crossed her face. It wasn’t that this was out of the ordinary. They were always sending a ping to each other just to check on each other but it still made her smile, especially when he was the first one to reach out.
Ryan – Hey, just wanted to see how your week was looking? I didn’t get a chance to ask before we were out of the elevator.
Max – Oh, I get it, and shouldn’t be too bad. No meetings so just admin stuff and sending emails and all of that fun stuff. Maybe actually able to get real work done this week haha.
Ryan – Oh, lucky!
Max – Yeah, what we doing for lunch today? I am already starving and I don’t want to eat what I brought.
Ryan – Hmm… wanna do that mediterranean place?
Max – Yeah, that sounds really good actually!
Max got to work, sending out her emails and thinking about all that her life had changed since that first lunch with Ryan where Mark had seen them on campus. She thought her life was perfect then and couldn’t have gotten better… but now, it’s not even close. This is perfect, and she wouldn’t want it with anyone other then Mark.
Her work kind of dragged as she thought more about the lunch break that was coming. She saw 11:45 on her clock and started to get ready. She sent her ping to Ryan.
Max – Elevators in five?
Ryan – Yes, finishing up now.
As Max made her way to the elevator she was felt the excitement she had felt the first time with Ryan maybe even more comparable to the feeling that she had when she met Brandon. Seeing Ryan at the elevator got her nerves going though. But they were eased as they both got to the comfortablness of talking that they always find in person.
Going down the elevator and to the car seemed like just a minute and then before Max knew it they were eating and enjoying conversation and just time together. Max knew that she needed to just ask about this weekend.
“So what all did you do this weekend?” Max asked
“Just hung out, went to some bars and all that fun stuff.” Ryan responded.
“Oh fun, got any fun plans like that this weekend?” Max hesitantly asked, hoping Ryan couldn’t hear the nerves and excitement in her voice that sounded so loud to her.
“Oh, nothing right now. Hoping to get some things done but nothing planned. What do you and the family have planned?”
“Probably doing something for the game for me and Mark, just something small but kids don’t have anything so might be kind of quiet.” Max said.
“Oh that sounds like a good weekend.”
“Yeah, if you end up not having anything, you should come by. Mark would love to meet you.” said Max, with as flirty of eyes as she could do.
“Oh?” Ryan, with maybe the first time Max could remember that Ryan looked nervous if not even a little shocked.
“Yeah, of course. He’s heard a lot about you.” Max said, trying not to be to forward.
“Oh, yeah, that could be fun.” Ryan said, still hesitant. Max realized that if she wanted this to happen, she was going to have to sell him on this idea and not let up. She knew they would have fun if she could get Ryan there… just trying to get him there.
The week dragged on as it was a mix of their normal banter and Max trying to reassure that it would be fun on Saturday. Friday rolled around and Max knew it was time to put her hard sale pitch on. She waited until it was around 3 and most people had left, when she sent a ping to Ryan.
Max – “Hey, what are you doing?”
Ryan – “Just trying to get through and not fall asleep lol. You?”
Max – “Same, so boring, lunch was way to much food lol… wanna go for a walk to get blood flowing?”
Ryan – “Yeah, that sounds perfect right now.”
Max met him again at the elevators, and they rode down to the lobby, their was a nice little walking path that they went on. They quickly got into the bullshitting and all of that, they got into a nice rhythm walking, Max took the chance.
“So, are we going to see you tomorrow?” Max asked.
“I don’t know, I might have some friends want to do something for the game.” Ryan said, Max could tell that he was feeling awkward.
“Look, I know you and me kissed, but Mark knows and it won’t be weird.” Max quickly spit out… her and Ryan were both shocked at how quick she got it out.
“Oh I am sure he loves that you kissed me.” Ryan laughingly replied… but when he looked at Max for her response, he read her eyes… seeing her eyes he quickly added “Wait, did he?”
Max quickly went in and kissed Ryan again, she knew they were at the furthest part of the walking track at that moment from the office and someone would have had to be almost on them to see them. “Yeah he did, and he’s not opposed to more of it happening.”
Max then quickly started walking, one because while she could be bold, all that was gone from her system right at that moment and she needed Ryan not to see her doubting herself. Ryan was shocked beyond belief, standing flat footed, and had forgotten they were on a walk until he heard Max “You better hurry up, or someone is going to think I killed you on this walk.”
They were almost completely quiet the whole way back to the office, the only words said when they got off the elevator was Ryan looking at Max and saying “I’ll see you tomorrow.” With that they both walked back to their desks.
