The air outside felt colder this time. I paced around. Behind me the party continued like nothing had happened.
The door slid open.
“Sara, don’t—” I started.
She was already there, arms folded, jaw set. “Don’t what? Come out here and explain myself?”
I turned, eyes blazing. “Explain how you’ve slept with all of my friends and never thought to mention it?”
Her eyes narrowed. “We never talked about past hookups. Not once. Not until you found out in the most dramatic way possible.”
“You didn’t think I deserved to know?”
“Why?” she snapped. “So you could build a fantasy where I’m untouchable? I had a life before you, Billy. You know how many guys I’ve not slept with in that room? And that's what matters to you?”
I stared at her, speechless.
She stepped closer, voice sharper now. “You’re acting like I cheated on you. I didn’t. You’re pissed because I had a past and because it makes you insecure. That’s not on me.”
“You could’ve warned me.”
“Warned you?” she laughed bitterly. “About what? That three of your friends once saw me naked years ago? Am I supposed to walk around with a sign that says ‘damaged goods’?”
“Jesus, I never said that.”
“You didn’t have to.” She took a breath, trembling now, not with fear but fury. “You think you’re mad because of me? No. You’re mad because all of your insecurities came out at the same time”
I didn’t answer. I Couldn’t.
“Grow up, Billy,” she said, stepping away. “Figure out what actually bothers you, me, or your pride.”
She turned and walked back inside. The door slid shut behind her.
I stood there stunned. Then the door slid open again, more gently this time.
Luke stepped out.
He didn’t say anything at first, just handed Me a beer and leaned against the railing.
I took it but didn’t drink.
“She’s not wrong,” Luke said after a while. “You two never talked about your pasts.”
“I know,” I muttered angrily.
“And you never asked. Probably because you didn’t want to know.”
I didn’t respond.
Luke glanced sideways at him. “You love her?”
“Yeah.”
“Then stop punishing her for something she didn’t even do while you were together.”
I swallowed hard. “I just feel like a joke, man. Sitting there like an idiot while everyone else knew something I didn’t. Like I’m the last one to get in on it.”
Luke nodded. “I get that.”
Inside, the music dipped. Voices rose.
Laughter.
“Dare,” someone said.
Then Jared’s voice: “I dare you to give another kiss to any guy here. And I get to judge.”
More laughter.
Billy and Luke locked eyes.
The party was still going. The game was still happening.
I took a long drink from the beer. “Do you think I’m overreacting?”
Luke shrugged. “No. But I think if you don’t say something soon, you’re gonna lose her.”
Billy stared out at the lights again. This time, quieter. Luke had always been my rock and I knew he wasn't wrong.

I leaned on the railing, beer half-empty.
Inside, the circle had shifted positions slightly more sprawled now, sloppier with the drinks and the dares. People were looser. The tension was electric to me.
Jared was in the center again, grinning like a game show host. Amanda sat cross-legged beside him, already halfway into another bottle of wine. Kevin was leaning back, looking smug. Scott’s eyes flicked between people nervous, or maybe just buzzed.
Sara was still there. Laughing again. But not the same laugh as before. This one had an edge to it. I watched her closely. She looked… energized and happy.
He couldn’t hear the setup to the dare, but the response was loud and clear.
Jared’s voice rang out through the door:
“Alright, Sara. Your dare: give a seven-second kiss to the person here who was the best in bed.”
The circle erupted in laughter. Someone howled. Someone else yelled, “Shit just got real!”
I froze.
Luke stiffened beside me. “No way she…”
But inside, Sara was already standing.
She didn’t hesitate.
Didn’t even look toward the door.
She walked slowly, and confidently and stopped in front of Kevin.
My hand clenched around the bottle.
“She’s just playing it up,” Luke said quickly. “It’s just part of the game.”
Then Sara leaned in.
One hand on Kevin’s shoulder.
And kissed him.
Longer than expected. Not a peck. Not a joke.
Slow. Deep. Intimate.
Someone counted out loud. “One… two… three…”
I couldn’t look away. The whole room had faded. Just Sara and Kevin kissing.
By the time they reached seven, Jared was laughing like a maniac. Amanda looked shocked. Even Scott looked stunned.
Sara pulled back and smiled. She sat back down like it was nothing.
Kevin didn’t say a word but he looked smug. Like he was the king of the room.
Luke put a hand on my shoulder. “Man… you okay?”
I didn’t answer. My Eyes were glassy. I was filled with rage and heart break.

I didn’t storm in and make a scene like any real boyfriend would do. I didn't scream or break the bottle or punch the glass.
I just… sat down.
Right there on the balcony floor, back against the wall. My face was blank, like if I kept it still enough, maybe none of this would be real.
Luke crouched beside me but didn’t speak. After a moment, he quietly went back inside, probably to give me space, maybe because he didn’t know what else to say.
I stayed there, the laughter and voices behind the glass sounding like a distant party in another life. Another world.
Then the door slid open again.
He didn’t even look up this time.
Soft footsteps. A familiar voice.
“Hey,” Amanda said gently. She sank down beside me, tugging her dress over her knees. She smelled like peach vodka and expensive perfume.
“I figured you might need a friend.”
I still didn’t look at her. “She kissed him. Like… really kissed him.”
“I know,” Amanda said quietly.
I rubbed my eyes. “Why would she do that?”
Amanda hesitated, then said, “Maybe because she wanted you to feel what she’s been feeling.”
That made him glance over.
Amanda shrugged. “You think it’s been easy for her? Sitting there while you silently judge her for a past she can’t change? Watching you get all quiet and cold instead of saying what you actually feel?”
“I never judged her,” I said. “I was just—surprised.”
“No, Billy,” Amanda said, softly but firm. “You were embarrassed. You felt like the whole room knew something you didn’t. And instead of asking her about it, you made her feel ashamed.”
I opened his mouth to argue—but couldn’t.
“She didn’t kiss Kevin to hurt you,” Amanda went on. “She kissed him to remind herself she doesn’t belong to anyone. Not even you. Especially not when you look at her like a problem.”
I rested my head back against the wall, eyes closed. “I didn’t mean to make her feel that way.”
“I know,” Amanda said. “But you did.”
Inside, someone cheered. More laughter.
Another dare.
Amanda looked toward the glass, then back at me. “She still loves you. I can tell. But she’s not going to keep chasing you through a minefield. If you want her, i mean really want her, you’re gonna have to meet her halfway. Flaws and all.”
I swallowed. “What if I already messed it up?”
Amanda gave me a sad smile. “Then you better start un-messing it. Before someone else decides they’re better at seeing her.”
She stood. Squeezed my shoulder. Then walked back inside, leaving the door cracked just slightly.
I sat alone again. But this time, I wasn’t frozen. I was thinking.

I pushed the door open with steady hands and stepped back inside.
The room fell into a brief hush. The game paused.
Sara looked up, eyes wary but curious.
Amanda gave me a small, encouraging nod. Luke caught my gaze and smiled faintly. I smiled back like he was holding myself together better than anyone expected.
“Alright,” I said, voice calm, maybe a little too smooth. “Let’s keep this show rolling.”
The bottle spun again.
It landed on… Kevin.
Kevin grinned wide and pointed at me. “Your turn, man.”
I took a deep breath.
“Truth or dare?” Kevin asked, eyes sharp.
My smile faltered just a bit.
“Truth,” I said, finally.
The room leaned in.
Kevin’s grin twisted into something more mischievous, more personal.
“Alright,” Kevin said, “What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you… in front of Sara.

My eyes flicked to Sara, who was watching me with that same unreadable expression.
I cleared my throat, forcing the words out steady but soft:
“Okay… the most embarrassing thing? Well… it happened a few months ago. We were at this restaurant—”
I paused, trying to ignore the burn rising in his cheeks.
“I got so nervous around her that I accidentally knocked over a whole glass of water, right onto her lap.”
A small chuckle rippled through the group.
“She laughed, but I was mortified. And Sara? She just smiled at me like it was cute.”
I looked directly at Sara now, voice quieter.
“That’s when I realized… no matter how many times I mess up, she still sticks around.”
A breath exhaled around the room.
Sara’s lips twitched into a genuine smile for the first time that night.
Kevin nodded, clapping me on the shoulder. “Dude, that’s actually kind of sweet.”
Amanda smiled warmly. Luke gave me a thumbs-up.
I exhaled, a mix of relief and lingering tension.
The game was still on—but something had shifted.

More to come….

Reading is one thing…

But some people are actually living it.
