Jay, Dom, and some of the other guys drank their beers and talked sports in the kitchen, while we girls drank chatted in the living room. I couldn’t help but turn and look at Dom from time to time, admiring him holding court like last time. He just has that personality. His presence is felt in the room. He’s in charge and everyone knows it. Sarah is the same way. She was too busy telling us about the restaurants Dom keeps taking her to to notice my glances.

Jay was next to Dom. Jay looked like he was having a great time with his old friend, but I have to say, he looked a little ridiculous. Dom has to be 6’3”. He’s all muscle. An imposing figure. Jay is 5’5” and stocky. Sometimes I take our chihuahua to the dog park. It’s hilarious seeing him next to a bull mastiff. Like it’s hard to believe they’re the same species. Jay and Dom are no different, and I found myself thinking Sarah is right. I deserve more. It didn’t get any better when Dom kept clapping Jay on the back, a little too hard, and Jay just took it. He probably liked the attention from the most enviable man in the room.

Then Jay came in the living room and said,”Ladies, let’s play some flippy cups.” Ugh. It sounded so dorky coming from him.

Sarah chimed in: “Reliving your college boy days, huh Jay?”

Jay yipped back, “Yeah, something like that,” thinking he had the upper hand, not realizing how insecure he sounded. I was embarrassed, and Sarah shooting me a smile didn’t help.

It was boys vs girls. We played with light beer. The boys won the first round handily. The highlight was when Dominic asked Sarah, “Why aren’t you as skilled as Meg, babe?”

Jay loved that. “Yeah Sarah. Why is that?”

Before Sarah could speak, Dom put his hand on Jay’s shoulder. “You’re one to speak, pal. We won, no thanks to you.”

The room went awkwardly silent, and Jay’s face turned bright red. I was so embarrassed for him. But I sort of felt for him, too. He actually looked a little scared, like he was reliving some trauma or something. I broke the silence. “Let’s switch teams. We trade Sarah for Jay.” Dom smiled at me, and Jay perked up.

We played the next round. It was the first to win five games. Jay and Sarah were the anchors. The first game, we had the lead. Jay missed his flip four times and Sarah got it on the first. Jay put his head down. Sarah chortled and said to me, in a jokey way only she can, “Guess you like being on the losing team, huh Meg?”

Jay’s attempt to defend me, or himself, or who knows, came in a tone like he was trying to joke but that didn’t land. “Guess you like being a bitch, huh Sarah.”

The room got tense. Dom spoke up. “Fightin’ words from a fighty sorta guy. Prove it on the field Jay, k, bro?” The tone was congenial , but intimated that next time Jay called Dom’s girl a bitch, he wouldn’t be as nice about it. The room chuckled and the round continued.

Let it be known, we were all pretty drunk at this point. Everyone’s skills were quickly dwindling. Jay actually won us a round, and we were tied at four. The final game of the round came down to the wire. Jay and Sarah missed their first three flips. Sarah nailed the fourth. Jay hung his head in shame. Sarah couldn’t resist: “In your face, bitch!”

All Jay could muster was a little bark: “Fuck off, Sarah.” Then he looked at me. “”Let’s go, Meg.”

Dom said calmly: “Meg’s not going anywhere. We have more rounds to play and she’s the MVP.”

I waited a beat, torn about how to react. It felt like a big moment. Then I said it: “Dom’s right, Jay. I’m the MVP and I have more rounds to play.”

Sarah pounced, pointed to the wall. She spoke like a queen demanding a peasant’s head: “Off to the side boy!”

The others, initially having not known what to do, were clearly on Sarah’s side now. They were all laughing. Jay was on an island, one on which I’d always joined him. Not this time. Something broke in me. I couldn’t take his weakness anymore.

So I enjoyed it when I saw Dom’s true bully come out. He looked me dead in the eyes and said, “Don’t feel bad Megan. Jay’s always been more comfortable on the sidelines.” Then he looked at Jay and scoffed, “Isn’t that right, perv?”

The whole room went “Whewwwww” with anticipation. Jay was tomato red. He went silent.

Sarah took advantage of: “What do ya mean, babe? Why’s he a perv?”

“We used to be roommates. Let’s just say he likes to jerk off while others get laid.”

Jay finally found his voice. “That’s bullshit! Still the same old bully! I should’ve known!” He ran out of the room. If he thought he was dispelling any notions, his overreaction was a dead giveaway that Dom was telling the truth.

“I’m sorry about him, everyone,” I said. I found the final shreds of feeling for Jay. “I guess I better go find him.”

By the time I got outside, he was driving away. The fucker left me at the party. I was pissed at the time. Shortly after, I was very, very thankful.
