I’m 19 and from Singapore. A few months ago, I found out something that completely changed the way I look at relationships. The strange part is that there wasn’t some dramatic revelation. It was more like a slow realization that hit me all at once. My boyfriend and I had been together for over a year. We weren’t perfect, but I thought we were happy. Over time, though, little things started changing. He replied less often, cancelled plans more frequently, and seemed distant whenever we were together. Every time I asked if something was wrong, he’d tell me he was stressed or tired, and I believed him because I wanted to. One evening, I met up with a few mutual friends. During the conversation, someone casually mentioned how different he had seemed lately. Another friend agreed. That’s when it hit me: people around us had noticed the change long before I did. I had spent months making excuses because I was afraid of what the truth might be. When we finally talked honestly, there wasn’t a huge argument. He admitted he wasn’t as invested in the relationship anymore and hadn’t known how to tell me. Hearing that hurt, but it also brought a strange sense of relief. I wasn’t imagining things. The distance was real. Looking back now, I think the hardest part wasn’t the breakup itself. It was realizing how easy it is to ignore obvious signs when you care deeply about someone. I’m doing better these days, focusing on school, friends, and figuring out who I am outside of a relationship. It wasn’t the ending I wanted, but it taught me something important: sometimes accepting the truth is the first step toward moving forward
