By the time the clock read past eight, Jenna had been nervously pacing the soft beige carpet of their modest second-floor apartment for hours. Her heart raced with anticipation—though she was alone, she knew it wouldn’t be for long. Any moment now, Lee would come home. She longed to share every detail of her eventful afternoon spent with Nikki and Susan.
To greet her husband fresh and inviting after his grueling day, Jenna treated herself to a long, steaming shower, washing away sunscreen and the faint sweetness of the strawberry daiquiris she’d savored earlier. Once clean and refreshed, she lathered her sun-kissed skin with a fragrant Sun-Ripened Raspberry lotion from Bath and Body Works. Then, she slipped into a comfortable oversized t-shirt and a pair of faded Soffe cotton shorts from her cheerleading days, deliberately rolling down the waistband to make them even shorter, hoping Lee would notice her bronzed, bare legs.
Beneath those shorts, she wore plain white cotton panties from Walmart—innocent and unassuming, reflecting her small-town roots. But just under the soft fabric of her t-shirt, Jenna had purposefully gone without a bra. It was a subtle, teasing invitation, an unspoken hint that she was feeling playful and eager—eager for a night of passion that had been scarce since their move to the city.
Her spirit was buoyant after making two new friends, a wave of optimism surging through her. The day had been a refreshing change in her otherwise lonely routine, and now she was ready to see Lee, to tell him everything—even though she understood he might be too tired to fully listen. Still, she’d gone the extra mile, preparing a warm dinner, carefully keeping the plate covered with foil to keep it fresh until he arrived.
Her bare feet had wandered several times near the living room’s sliding glass door. At last, she stepped outside onto the small second-story balcony, leaning against the railing. Below, the apartment complex’s swimming pool shimmered turquoise under underwater floodlights. A gentle smile played on her lips as she watched the water ripple, thoughts drifting back to the warmth and acceptance she had felt earlier that day. Not only had she made friends, but she had become part of a sophisticated, vibrant city life—a world where two beautiful women had seen her as someone special.
The sultry evening soon drove her indoors, closing the sliding glass door behind her, only to be met by the sight of unpacked cardboard boxes cluttering the living room. The reminder of their recent move and the loneliness she’d battled these past weeks washed over her again.
Yet Nikki’s confident, reassuring voice echoed in her mind, planting a seed of hope that she wouldn’t always be isolated. For the first time since arriving in Dallas, Jenna felt a glimmer of promise knowing she might truly flourish in this new chapter.
When Lee finally turned the key and entered, he appeared as a weary shadow of the small-town boy she’d married just weeks before. His red Target polo was rumpled and worn, his broad shoulders stooped under the weight of a demanding sixty-hour week, his eyes glassy with fatigue.
He didn’t pause for a hug; instead, he headed straight for the refrigerator in search of sweet tea. But Jenna’s heart fluttered with the adrenaline Nikki and Susan had stirred within her that afternoon. She followed closely behind him into the kitchen, literally bouncing on her toes like a child welcoming a parent home.
“Lee, you won’t believe how my day went!” Jenna’s soft voice pierced the quiet hum as he twisted open the cap on the gallon of Red Diamond sweet tea.
Lee took a long, deliberate swallow, wiping his mouth before resting his forehead against the cold container for a brief moment. Turning to her, a tired but affectionate smile flickered, revealing a glimpse of the sweet boy from East Texas he once was before corporate life weighed him down.
“What happened, babe?” His voice was husky from twelve hours spent shouting over pallet jacks and wrestling delivery manifests.
“I applied at Chili’s!” she blurted, her hands animated. “The one just down the street from your store!”
Lee blinked, his tired mind processing the news. He knew how desperately Jenna had been seeking part-time work, how discouraging the last few weeks had been. Until now, she’d only dared apply at small diners and family restaurants nearby, avoiding busy chains like TGI Fridays, Razzoo’s, Chili’s, or Applebee’s out of fear they wouldn’t call her back given her limited experience.
Just a week prior, during one of her bleak moments, Lee half-jokingly suggested she ‘swing for the fences’ and try Hooters. Jenna had laughed, pointing out she lacked the “assets” required for such a job, but he teased back that her irresistibly cute bubble butt would more than make up for it in their skimpy shorts.
“Chili’s?” Lee echoed, setting down the tea jug, focus sharpening for the first time all day. “Susan used to work there during college and still picks up shifts now and then. If you get a job there, at least you’d know someone—even if you don’t work the same shifts. That sounds promising.”
He softened, the exhaustion briefly lifted. “Tell me everything about how your day unfolded leading to that application.”
Jenna placed the foil-covered plate on the tiny kitchen table, letting the aroma of grilled pork chops, mashed potatoes, and sweet peas fill the room. Lee collapsed into his chair, eager fork in hand, as she recounted the afternoon.
“I was nervous when I first got to Susan’s apartment,” Jenna admitted, her East Texan drawl gentle and sincere. “You know I struggle meeting new people, but from the moment I crossed the security gate to the pool, Susan made me feel right at home. She introduced me to Nikki—oh, and I didn’t realize until today that Susan’s place is less than a mile from ours, just across Towne Crossing Boulevard.”
Lee listened attentively, nodding between bites as Jenna described the warmth of the poolside conversations—a refreshing change from her lonely days—and how she had finally landed a solid lead for a server job. She giggled softly recalling their wedding day stories, the ceremony at their small-town church, leaving out the steamy tale about her neon orange thong bikini from their honeymoon, deciding that story was better reserved for later.
“Nikki said my time at the Golden Corral might help with a smaller café interview, but connections are everything in this city,” Jenna explained. “Turns out, she’s good friends with Tony, an assistant manager at Chili’s. She promised to call in a favor to get me an interview—but only if I applied within 24 hours.”
Jenna detailed how Nikki orchestrated the afternoon, setting a strict deadline to get the application in before she spoke to Tony on Jenna’s behalf. Afterpool time, Nikki urged Jenna to hurry home, change out of her swimsuit, and then Susan would pick her up to take her to Chili’s.
To Lee, overwhelmed by his corporate grind, Nikki’s hurried matchmaking seemed just another item crossed off a long list.
“I was so excited about making progress that I rushed home, changed, and waited outside for Susan’s gray Jeep Cherokee,” Jenna continued. “On the drive, Susan shared stories about work and wild customers. When we arrived, she took me straight inside to grab an application from the hostess before we settled in the Jeep to fill it out quietly.”
Lee smiled warmly, fully engaged now.
“Susan helped me with questions and even offered to be a reference, which I gladly accepted. I also added Nikki and my old Golden Corral manager as references. As soon as the application was complete, Susan sent me back inside to turn it in.”
Lee muttered, finishing his meal with relief washing over his face. “That’s incredible, babe. I told you getting out and making friends would help. I hate leaving you alone all day in this little apartment.”
“With someone like Susan, who knows everything about Chili’s, and Nikki, who’s well-connected, helping you out? You’ve got just the break you needed. I was worried about affording your books and tuition at UTA this fall, but a job there could help us get by until my bonuses come through.”
His tired grin grew genuine. “If you get hired, we’ll be just a mile apart when we work. I could even drop by for a bite or a beer and see you.”
“That would be amazing,” Jenna beamed. “I barely get to see you now. You visiting would mean so much, and you’d finally meet the people I work with!”
“So… now that you’ve eaten, want to cuddle on the couch and watch an episode of Friends before bed?” Jenna asked, her voice playful.
“Maybe another night. It’s been a long day. I’m too wiped. Thanks for dinner,” Lee said, standing slowly, fatigue overtaking him.
He pulled her close for a quick kiss before retreating to their bedroom. Jenna followed, her excitement deflating as she saw his exhaustion blocking her subtle invitations.
She sat on the bed’s edge, knees drawn up, clad in her oversized tee and tiny cotton shorts, the golden glow of her sun-kissed legs making her seem almost adolescent. Her gentle demeanor only heightened her youthful appearance—more like a high school junior than a college one.
Despite this, inside Jenna was burning with desire. The thrill of her day, the spark from recalling the honeymoon bikini, the intoxicating energy of the city, and the hope of a solid job all combined to leave her flushed and restless. She wished to share this passion with Lee and find release, but his fatigue crushed her hopes once again.
“Lee?” she whispered softly, biting her lip, desperate for attention. “Nikki told me something interesting today. She’s bisexual and in an open relationship with her boyfriend, Ty. They see whoever they want—as long as there are no secrets.”
Jenna watched carefully, waiting for him to react. She purposely left out that Nikki had commented on her skimpy swimsuit, wondering why she wasn’t wearing something even sexier.
But Lee didn’t flinch. Overcome with exhaustion, the idea of alternative lifestyles in a sprawling metroplex barely registered; just abstract background noise.
“It’s a big city, Jenna,” he mumbled, eyelids heavy as he pulled up the covers. “People live differently here. If Susan trusts Nikki and she can get you an interview with Tony, that’s what matters. I just want you happy so you don’t feel alone.”
As sleep overtook him, Jenna shook his arm gently, her soft drawl urgent. “Please, before you fall asleep, promise me you’ll ask Susan tomorrow if she expects to hear from Tony or Nikki soon. I’m so anxious. Promise?”
“Yeah, yeah… okay, sweetheart, I promise,” he murmured, rolling over and whispering goodnight.
That night, Jenna lay awake in the darkness as Lee’s deep snoring filled the room. Her mind raced, dwelling on the sharp contrast between her husband’s corporate servitude and Nikki’s radiant freedom and confidence.
Gazing at the shadows above, a thrilling stir fluttered in her belly. She recalled Lee telling her on their honeymoon that now she was free from her mother’s watchful eye—married and on her own in a big city—she could dress less conservatively and explore newfound boundaries without fear.
Unbeknownst to Lee, his draining corporate life had just handed Nikki a perfect opportunity—an open door to guide his innocent, young wife toward this very freedom.
