Noah usually felt out of place at the quartz-topped tables, and this morning was no exception as he watched Mike devour plate after plate piled high with eggs, bacon, and hashbrowns.

Rachel sat close beside him, nibbling yogurt sprinkled with granola, her eyes scanning the crowd of students coming in.

“It’s quiet this morning,” Rachel remarked.

Mike grunted, wiping his mouth after finishing his second plate of eggs and letting out a loud belch.

“Probably ’cause of the game last night,” he said. “Most folks party afterward.”

“Oh, Ethan played, right?” Rachel asked.

“He starts every game,” Mike replied, shoveling bacon greedily into his mouth.

“Do you guys ever watch him play?” Noah inquired.

Mike shrugged. “Sometimes. Godfrey Stadium fills up fast, so good luck getting a seat. Plus, I’m usually busy with other stuff.”

“I thought you were into sports,” Noah said, curious.

Mike blinked. “Why’s that?”

“I don’t know, you just seemed like the sporty type to me.”

Mike shook his head. “Nah, sports bore me. I did wrestling back in the day, but I didn’t want to do it in college.”

“So, what do you like to do for fun?” Rachel pressed.

A sly grin spread across Mike’s face. “Party and fuck,” he declared loudly.

Rachel shot him a sharp glare as heads turned toward their table.

“Mike! Keep it down,” she whispered.

“Right, sorry,” he said, flashing a polite smile to the neighboring students. “I do like to fuck, but not with her — that’s his girlfriend, so we don’t do that.” He glanced at Rachel, seeking her approval. She shook her head, letting out a soft laugh.

“We’ve got some work to do,” she teased, squeezing Noah’s arm as Mike laughed, finishing his bacon before piling more eggs onto his plate.

“Speaking of fucking,” Mike started hesitantly, “I remember bits of last night — it felt incredible, but I’m kinda foggy on the details.”

“That’s how it goes when you’re drunk,” Noah answered.

“Yeah, I guess I just need a reality check. Did we really go all out? Like, multiple times?”

“Yes, Mike, it really happened,” Noah confirmed.

Mike’s eyes widened, staring at Rachel with awe. “Holy shit, I’m so damn lucky. This morning’s been amazing too.”

At that moment, Jack approached with a warm smile.

“What’s so awesome about this morning?” he asked Mike, who looked at Rachel and Noah nervously.

“Uh, you know… stuff,” Mike mumbled.

Jack slid in next to him, curiosity shining in his eyes. “What kind of stuff?”

“Jack, maybe we should skip this topic. It’s kinda sensitive,” Rachel interjected, catching Noah’s surprised glance.

“You don’t want him to know?” Noah asked.

Rachel laughed uneasily.

“Don’t want me to know what?” Jack pressed.

“Ooooh man, this just got interesting,” Mike chuckled. Jack’s face darkened as realization dawned.

“Wait… did you two…”

“We fucked!” Mike said, holding out his hand for a high five. Jack stared at Rachel, conflicted, before weakly tapping Mike’s hand.

“You fucked,” Jack repeated dully. Rachel blushed, smoothing her hair.

“We did,” she confirmed.

Noah watched Jack carefully, surprised at the subtle turmoil in his expression.

“Dude, I completely rocked her, it was mind-blowing — definitely top ten for me,” Mike boasted.

“Top ten, huh? Must be proud, Rachel,” Jack said dryly, taking a sip of his coffee. Rachel’s brow furrowed.

“What do you mean?” she asked.

“Nothing,” Jack replied briskly. Mike grabbed Jack’s coffee and took a sip, prompting an annoyed glare.

“Thanks, bro. I’m exhausted,” Mike said, handing it back.

“You’re welcome…” Jack answered.

“God, I wish I could see it again. Kinda bummed I was drunk for half of it,” Mike admitted.

Noah cleared his throat. “I recorded it,” he said quietly.

Jack and Mike both turned to him, intrigued.

“You recorded it? Why?” Jack asked, puzzled.

Noah shrugged. “I don’t know, it just felt right at the time.” Rachel chimed in, “We both enjoy it. No harm in recording something we want to remember.”

“I’m not so sure I’d feel the same,” Jack muttered.

“Good thing you’re not Noah,” Rachel retorted. The tension between them thickened as Jack sipped his coffee, eyes cold.

“I guess you’re right,” he said quietly.

“Does it bother you?” Rachel pressed.

“Who said it bothers me?” Jack snapped.

“You’re acting weird about it,” Rachel replied. Jack shook his head, running his fingers through his hair.

Their conversation faded as Noah’s gaze drifted across the room, locking onto a figure from a past he’d fought hard to bury—a man he never wanted to see again.

Brian.

“Look, I’m not trying to start trouble,” Jack said.

“Well, you’re doing a terrible job,” Rachel shot back.

“I’m just trying to understand. So, does this mean Mike’s going to be fucking you regularly now?” Jack asked.

“I fucking hope so,” Mike replied, punching Jack’s shoulder playfully. Rachel leaned back, arms crossed.

“What if he is?” she asked. Jack sighed, shaking his head.

“Look, I get it, you two are into this. I just wasn’t expecting it,” he said, forcing a smile as his eyes drifted away.

“Expecting or not, no reason to get upset,” Rachel said.

“I just don’t understand how you’re not jealous…” Jack began, voice trailing off. Noah lost track of their words as his attention remained fixed on Brian.

A thousand thoughts flashed in Noah’s mind, the strongest being how to get Rachel out of here before Brian noticed them.

“Look Jack, we don’t have to explain why it works for us. It just does. Can we drop it?” Rachel requested.

Jack nodded slowly. “Yeah, I have to go anyway. I’ll catch you later.” He stood, and Noah snapped back, smiling weakly.

“Yeah, see you, Jack.”

“Yeah…” Jack replied, disappearing into the growing crowd. Rachel sighed in frustration, then turned her gaze to Mike.

“What’s his deal? Did he get his feelings hurt?” Rachel asked.

Mike shrugged. “He’s always been emotional. His thing, I guess.”

“Noah, what do you think?” Rachel inquired.

Noah didn’t respond, lost in thought.

Rachel nudged him gently. “Noah?”

Still silent, she leaned forward and stroked his arm. “Hey, everything alright?”

“It’s him,” Noah said flatly.

“Who?” Rachel asked, eyes narrowing as she looked into the crowd.

“Brian,” Noah murmured, the name like icy water running down his spine.

“Wait, the Brian?” Rachel whispered.

“Yeah, the one.”

“Who’s Brian?” Mike asked, glancing at the table in question. “Tall football guy, right?”

“Mike, don’t look,” Noah warned, but Mike continued chewing, unconcerned.

“Whatever. So what’s the deal with him?” Mike asked.

“It’s not important; we need to get out of here,” Noah said urgently, gathering his things. Rachel followed without question.

“I kinda want to finish my food,” Mike said.

“You ate four plates of eggs. You can skip the hash browns,” Rachel countered, slinging her backpack over her shoulder as Noah stood.

“Man, all this for a football guy? If you want me to handle it, just say the word,” Mike offered.

“Mike, please, let’s just go,” Rachel said softly.

Mike sighed, rising slowly. As they prepared to leave, Noah glanced back at Brian, his heart sinking at the overly friendly wave Brian gave as he approached.

“Shit…” Noah muttered.

“Oh no, he’s spotted us,” Rachel said.

“Looks like it,” Noah replied.

“Are you going to be okay?” Rachel asked, concern lacing her voice.

Noah took slow, steady breaths, shaking his head. “Yeah. Let’s just get this over with.”

Brian crossed the floor with an easy grin, arms open wide.

“Holy shit, it’s really you! I thought I was seeing a ghost,” he said, pulling Noah into a rough hug like old times. Noah hugged him back weakly, stealing a glance at Rachel.

“Good to see you, Brian,” Noah said shortly. Despite the underlying anger, Brian had clearly bulked up since high school.

“Didn’t know you went here,” Brian said, tone clipped.

“Yeah, great IT program,” Noah replied flatly.

Brian laughed coldly. “Surprised you got in. Always the nerd, but I never thought you’d make it to Godfrey.” Mike grunted annoyedly, stepping next to Rachel and Noah.
