The cool night air hit me like a slap. I stepped onto the balcony and gripped the railing, knuckles white. Laughter and music bled through the sliding door behind me. I stared out over the city, chest tight, heart beating fast. The image of that kiss looped over and over in my head. Sara’s lips, Kevins hand on her thigh, the way she had leaned in instead of pulling away.
Was she just playing along?
Was she… enjoying it?
The door slid open. I didn’t have to turn to know it was her.
“Billy,” she said, softly. “Hey.”
I didn’t answer.
She came beside him, wrapping her arms around herself. “You okay?”
I let out a dry laugh. “Do I look okay?”
Silence. Then:
“You said it was fine.”
“Yeah,” I snapped, finally turning to face her. “Because what the hell else was I supposed to say? Everyone was watching. I didn’t want to be that guy, the jealous boyfriend who ruins the game.”
Sara looked hurt, genuinely. “I didn’t mean to upset you.”
“You didn’t mean to?” my voice cracked. “You let someone kiss you. Blindfolded. While I sat there and watched.”
“I thought it would be harmless! It was supposed to be a joke.”
“It didn’t look like a joke,” I said.
My stomach churned. “And that doesn’t bother you that you kissed Kevin like that in front of me? That he touched you like that? Kissed you like….”
She took a step closer. “What do you want me to say, Billy? That I hated it? That I was disgusted? I wasn’t. It was confusing. It was weird. But I didn’t stop it because… part of me felt alive. Desired. Like I wasn’t just your girlfriend sitting on the sidelines.”
I recoiled. “Jesus.”
“I love you,” she said quickly. “You know that. But sometimes it feels like you’re always holding back, and tonight… I don’t know, I guess I wanted to see what would happen if we pushed a little.”
I stared at her. “So this was some kind of test?”
“No,” she said. “But maybe it was a wake-up call.”
They stood in silence.
“I can’t compete with them,” I said finally, voice low. “Not for your attention. Not for… whatever that was.”
Sara frowned. “Is that really how you see this? Like I’m waiting for someone better?”
I didn’t answer. Because maybe, deep down, that’s exactly what I feared.
She exhaled. “Then we have a bigger problem than one kiss in a stupid game. She said, "look let's just talk about this later and go back inside and have some fun for a change." I hesitantly agreed. Maybe I had over reacted and it was just a simple game. I decided to tough it out.
Back inside, the circle had reformed. Sara sat with her knees tucked beneath her, wine glass in hand, trying to act casual. I stood hesitating for only a moment before sitting beside her. Not close enough to touch.
Jared flashed a grin. “Alright, truth or dare still in effect. And look who’s back. Welcome, Billy.”
Sara smiled too tightly. “Let’s keep it going.”
Jared spun the bottle. It clicked and wobbled, until it landed squarely on Sara.
Jared raised an eyebrow. “Truth or dare?”
Sara paused this time. She looked at Billy, gauging.
Then said, “Truth.”
Jared grinned wider. “Okay, let’s make this interesting…”
Amanda snorted. “Of course.”
Jared leaned back with a wicked smile, “Out of everyone here how many guys in this room have you has sex with?”
The room went silent. I tensed beside her. I expected her to laugh it off as a joke and say none, but that isn't what happened.
Sara took a sip of her drink. Then calmly replied: “Four.” Silence.
I blinked. “Wait… what?”
Jared gave a mock gasp, and Amanda actually choked on her drink.
Kevin stared at the floor. Scott scratched his neck and avoided everyone’s eyes. Jared just smirked—but didn’t speak.
I looked around the circle, then back to Sara. “Are you serious?”
She glanced at me, expression unreadable. “It was before us.”
“All four of them?” my voice weak and on the verge of crying.
Sara didn’t answer. She didn’t have to.
Kevin cleared his throat. “It wasn’t like that, man.”
I stood up. “Wasn’t like what? You’ve all been with her and just never thought to tell me?”
Jared raised a hand. “Look, man Billy”
I cut him off. “You too?”
Jared shrugged, unapologetic. “Years ago. High school. You guys weren’t even a thing.”
My head was spinning. I looked at Sara. “You said four. Kevin, jared, scott, and me?”
She nodded.
No shame. No apology. Just brutal honesty
“Jesus Christ.” I took a step back. “You let me sit through this game, watch that kiss, and then just drop this like it’s nothing?”
Sara’s voice was low. “I didn’t want to lie. You said you wanted honesty.”
“Not this kind of honesty.”
The room was dead quiet now.
“I need air,” I said again, and walked out.
