Alec had everything planned to the last detail. A romantic, intimate Valentines night meal at home with his wife. He would get things back on an even keel, make her see sense, make her realise just how much he loved her, needed her.

He had taken the day off work to make sure it would be perfect. Prepared the food, set the dining room with the best crockery, dimmed lighting and candles to set the mood. An expensive bottle of her favourite wine in the ice bucket, opened and ready to pour.

He had made a real effort over his appearance, a neat haircut and shave earlier that morning, his best suit fresh from the cleaners. He knew he looked good. He knew getting everything perfect was essential. It had to be to get things back to normal.

He thought back to when it all started, all the warning signals were there but he chose to ignore them. Susie loved him, they were happy together, a little light flirting wasn’t going to hurt them. Harmless fun. He wouldn’t make a scene.

Sure Rick was a charming man, Alec could see that when they were first introduced at the dinner party and it was only natural he would find Susie attractive. What man wouldn’t, she was vivacious and beautiful with a stunning figure, every man’s dream woman.

Sat next to each other opposite Alec at the dinner table they were soon deep

In conversation, laughing together, obviously hitting it off straight away. Neither of them

made any effort to include Alec in their conversation which he found a little rude but he wasn’t the sort to make a fuss so he sat in silence as he watched them.

As the wine flowed Susie seemed to have forgotten he was there. All her attention was on her newfound friend. Alec noticed her hand started touching Rick’s arm as she talked, leaning in towards him more as she laughed, her eyes staring admiringly into his.

He told himself it wasn’t anything to worry about. Their marriage was strong, they trusted each other, loved each other. Rick was obviously quite taken with his wife but he was wasting his time. Susie would never be unfaithful.

He was surprised that they openly exchanged phone numbers at the end of the evening but he knew Susie was just being polite and when they kissed goodbye, lingering a bit longer than necessary, he put it down to a little too much wine.

He could have made a scene when they got home, voiced his displeasure but that wasn’t his way. Best to ignore it, forget it all together. He wasn’t a threat after all, they’d probably never see him again.

Susie seemed a bit distant the next few days, distracted, cold towards him almost. Probably had a few too many wines at the party he thought. Feeling a bit guilty maybe. It was understandable, he wouldn’t make things worse by asking. He’d be considerate, give her space. Didn’t want to do the jealous husband thing.

He did notice she was texting a lot more, often smiling as she read her messages and answering straight away, she’d never really kept in touch with her friends since they married but it was a good thing she was getting back in touch he thought. Good for her social life. He wouldn’t interfere.

He clearly remembered the first time she told him she was going out for the night, a girls night out said, no he didn’t know them they were new friends from work. She might be home late, no point him waiting up.

Alec remembered how shocked he was when he saw what she was wearing, he’d never seen her dressed like that. “It’s what the other girls wear” she explained, “I know you haven’t seen them before, I went shopping this morning. I want to look nice, it’s not a problem is it?”

“No, sorry, of course it’s not. It’s just it’s so short, revealing, I was surprised that’s all. It looks perfect on you.”

Alec was asleep by the time she got in but he knew she must of enjoyed herself as her nights out, dressed up to the nines, became more and more frequent.

He never asked where she was going, he didn’t want to be possessive. Better to show how much he trusted her, had faith in her. After all, they were both in love, they only had eyes for each other didn’t they. Nothing to worry about.

Sex between them had become non existent, Susie was constantly tired and rebuffed all his advances. For the first time he was worried. Had he missed something? Had he done something wrong to upset her?

He needed to try harder and he was going to. Tonight, Valentines night.

Susie rushed through the door after work, he loved seeing her in her office clothes. Tight pencil skirt hugging her shapely thighs, silky blouse and high heels, the image of a successful, powerful business woman. She stopped abruptly when she noticed the table laid ready and her husband dressed so smartly.

“What on earth….”, she began.

“I wanted you to make the night special, for you, for us, a surprise”, he said proudly.

“Without consulting me, really Alec, what makes you think I don’t already have plans?”

“But, it’s Valentines darling. The night you spend with the one you love.”

“Exactly”, she said firmly, “oh come on Alec, don’t keep pretending you don’t know, you must do, you can’t be that naive”

“Know what”, he said nervously, a feeling of dread starting deep in his stomach

“You really don’t know?, I just thought you were ok with it. I didn’t exactly hide it and you didn’t once object or try to stop it. I thought you were just happy to accept it, resigned to it.”

“To what”?

“To Rick, to Rick and me”

“You.. you’ve been seeing Rick”

Susie laughed, “Oh my god Alec, I can’t believe you can be that stupid, so blind. Deep down you must of known you’re just too weak to do anything about it. We’ve been seeing each other since that first night. He’s everything you’re not, a real man, strong, sexy, funny. He wouldn’t tolerate anyone else trying to take me away from him, not like you. You could have tried to stop this at any time but you didn’t did you. It’s quite pathetic, you deserve this, you don’t deserve me.”

“But, I’ve spent all day preparing this for you”

Susie looked around at everything he had done and smiled. “Yes, you have haven’t you. You’ve always been the doting, attentive husband but I need someone stronger, someone I can look up to and respect. And I’ve found him. You said earlier valentines is a night you should spend with the one you love and I will but it’s not you. Not anymore, I will be spending the night with the man I truly love, with Rick”

Susie looked at her husband, she should have felt some sympathy for him but instead she just felt complete indifference. He deserved this. He’d brought it on himself. It was probably wrong but she found herself getting aroused by the control she had over the situation, over him.

She smiled, “it would be a shame to waste all this hard work you have put in though”

Alec looked confused, was there hope, was she changing her mind.

“I was going to meet Rick at our favourite restaurant but I’ll call him now and say there’s been a change of plan.”

“You’re staying?” Alec asked pleadingly

“Yes, Rick can come here, we can have our romantic dinner right here, with you serving us. It will be good for you to see us together. Help you understand that I’m not yours anymore. You’ve lost me to a better man. You should have seen this coming a long time ago. You need to accept it. You’ll see, it will be for the best. I think he may be planning on proposing tonight. You can be here when I accept. Our last goodbye.”
